“Everything you've ever wanted is sitting on the “Everything you've ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear”.

For long I considered quotes, as just blablabla with limited value. That was until I experienced their wisdom full hand.

As a child, I was deeply in love with the sea. I could play in it for hours, creating my own fantasy world, letting my imagination run wild. Growing up was another story. Without being able to pinpoint a moment, I let myself drip into the collective hydrophobia. Fear of the depth, fear of marine creatures, just fear of water.

For long my favorite playground turned into a place of discomfort. But “the sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever”. And so, almost out of nowhere, after my first trip to Costa Rica, I found myself intrigued by her beauty and mysteriousness again. I found myself longing for her liquid embrace.

I followed that pulse. It allowed me to go back into the sea and get shaped by water. It allowed me to explore her wonders like never before, by embracing diving and freediving.

Looking back, I understand that honoring one’s fear and resistance is important. These are telling us the important stuff. My fear of the big blue that was standing before me was a pivot point. A point from which my journey begun. By not confronting that fear, my passion, my potential would have remained untapped. By digging into it, I was able to enrich my present and future.

Forever grateful of the sea and the unlimited joy it’s bringing me.

Black Mermaid 🪸 I’m still very much amazed b Black Mermaid 🪸

I’m still very much amazed by the intensity at which some grown-ups are storming online to vividly criticize @hallebailey , the Black actress portraying @disneylittlemermaid fictional character: Ariel, the little mermaid.

« makemermaidswhiteagain » is some of the niceness one may read on the Internet, since it has been announced. But the equally racist slur that stuck with me the most was “You people can’t swim, how can a mermaid be Black?”.

With Eurocentric stories (fantasy or not) having for so long dominated the space it’s still is Greek to some that mermaids may have African origins, and therefore are not meant to be White only.

Have you ever heard about Yemoja or Mami Wata? Are you familiar with the Afrofuturist tale “The Deep”? What about Yetu from Rivers Salomon’s book?
Whether they are portrayed as malicious creatures sinking ships for fun, comforting underwater figures helping Black people find solace in the midst of the Transatlantic Slave Trade or ultimate symbols of femininity and beauty, Black mermaids have existed for millenniums.

Their stories have been told for as far as long throughout the African continent and its Diaspora, even though they have been constantly over-shadowed.

And it’s about time we tell these stories a little bit more.
It’s about time that Black & Brown bodies reclaim the ocean space. And not portrayed as victims only, but as happy, inspirational and victorious beings too; whether or not some see it fit.
So, go Black Ariel ! 🌊🧜🏽‍♀️

Beware of the woman shaped by water. Her heart is Beware of the woman shaped by water.

Her heart is an ocean, forever to be claimed,
Wild and untamed.

Love her with care, and she will treasure you,
Take her for granted and she will drown you, she will drown you.

A mermaid on the shore, a siren to the stranger,
Love her true, or face the danger,
Beware of the woman shaped by water.

In her, you'll find beauty and wonder
A force of nature, sometimes impossible to conquer,
Beware of this sea creature.
